Well no wonder it's so hard to get off the internets some nights?We do have to let kids discover their own individuality, as much as possible. Fashion is very creative. I love all Tim Burton films so I can't complain about the strange, and for most kids, expression comes in phases. Kids need to know you love and support them regardless of their habits.
Then there's the republican approach. Wait ti'll your father gets home, I forbid that, you will be punished forever. Good Christian upbringings that make straight looking kids neurotic, sneaky and destructive. How else do we explain republicans? The crime, the deviance the lack of humor?

Of course, there's the flipside, which was demonstrated to great effect in Bill Forsythe's 'Local Hero' in which the perceived weirdo kids in a little northScottish hamlet are the ones that don't belong to the tribe. By the end, of course, it becomes clear that the uniform means nothing....just like most ethnic differences.

gotta kind of watch things as a parental unit. when ours was a teen and i would take her in for her piercings, get mine too, (her dad was grossed by both of us), i had to give her SOMETHING to rebel about or there just wouldn't be any in her life. so i'd remember now and then to tell her hair was yucky or something like that.
that made her happy because she could bitch to her friends how horrible i was. that kept the rebellion on a kinda healthy level, you know, so it didn't extend too far into lunacy (that's my area, not hers). if she wasn't pissing off the folks SOMEHOW it made her more miserable then a teenager can already get.
oh ya, the music, gotta tell them ya can't stand their music).
